For those sure that I have identified will see what else I can find for them in the available documents using the Ancestry 8 subscription. As these relates to people who have lived more recently will only provide an overview.
2. James PITTOCK (1917 – 2002)
I can see him on the 1921 England Census with parents and sibling at 50 St Peter Street, Sandwich. Next he is on the 1939 England and Wales Register, at same address, with mother (showing as widowed) and sibling. He is unemployed at this point.
It then appears he became a Prisoner of War in Germany based on the UK and Allied Countries, World War II Liberated Prisoner of War Questionnaires, 1945-1946.
He possibly married in 1954 according to the England & Wales, Marriage Index 1916-2005. It is probable he remained living locally all his life until his death, at 84, in 2002 as per the England & Wales, Death Index 1916-2005.
4. John H PHILLIPS (1916 – 2000)
I can see him listed on his father’s WWI attestation paperwork in the UK, British Army World War I Service Records,1914-1920 data set. The address there shown as a place in Hertfordshire but it is crossed through so maybe that was just his father’s temporary lodging as opposed to home.
Next found on the 1921 England Census with both parents and four siblings living at 23 Upper Strand Street, Sandwich. On the 1939 Register still at the same address with both parents and two siblings.
He is employed as a Shop Assistant Corn & Seed Merchant in the town and also shown as undertaking a role with St John’s Ambulance. He married in 1945 and presumably stayed in Kent until his death, at 84, in 2000.
5. Christopher C COLLINS (1917 – 1996)
In 1921 he is living with parents and sister at Castle House, Richborough which is right behind the ruins of Richborough Roman Fort 8. His father worked as a shepherd / looker so they were in very rural surroundings instead of the others who were within the town.
There is not much of a different outlook from the property now although massive changes to the landscape have occurred just down the road with what is now known as the Sandwich Discovery Park 9 complex .
By 1939 they have moved to Great Napchester Farm which is on the edge of Whitfield and he is just there with his parents. Both he and his father are employed under Shepherd, Heavy Worker descriptors.
He married in 1942 and died, aged 79, in 1996 having spent most of that time living at Waldershare Park. There he was employed as a Shepherd for the estate taking over as the head one when his father retired.
6. Frederick G STOCKLEY (1918 – 2003)
The 1921 Census has him living with his parents at 25 Fisher Street, Sandwich. In the 1939 Register the three of them are now at 35 Upper Strand Street, Sandwich. Occupation shown as Blacksmiths Striker, Heavy Work.
It appears he married in 1947 and again in 1989. He died in 2003 at the age of 84. Another one who seems to have remained in the same area of Kent all his life. The registration districts change over time and not necessarily that the individuals have moved very far at all.
9. Douglas HIBBERT (1918 – 1986)
In 1921 found living in Pollar Avenue, Sandwich with his parents and four siblings. His father is a Motor Engineer and a sibling shown as a Motor Mechanic.
By 1939 they have moved to 1 Wellisey Terrace, Sandwich where his occupation is Civilian Motor Mechanic R A O C. He is alone with his parents but some of his siblings were quite a bit older than him.
He married in 1940 and then think find him as there is a person of the name who was a Petty Officer Motor Mechanic listed in the UK, London Gazettes World War II Military Notices, 1939-1945. He died in 1986 at the age of 68 still in the same part of Kent.
11. Edward C BLAKE (1916 – 1994)
During childhood looks like Ted was known by his middle name as per the 1921 Census where he is living with parents and two siblings. Both parents also using middle name so perhaps it was a family trait.
They are at 1 Three Kings Yard, Sandwich. His father’s employer shown as Anglo American Oil Co but he is put down as a General Labourer out of work which must have been difficult for the family.
Sadly his father then seems to have died in 1931 at not even 40 years of age according to documents including the UK, World War I Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923. He then married in 1938 under Thanet registration district.
By September 1939 he was working as a Converting Mill Sawyer, Heavy Worker and living at 67 Poulders Gardens, Sandwich with his wife and potentially a child as there is a restricted entry for that address. It seems that they also remained living in the area and he died in 1994 at the age of 77.
12. Wilfrid G WEST (1917 – 2000)
The first document for 1921 has him living at 18 St Peter Street, Sandwich with parents and four siblings. So presumably had been brought up with James PITTOCK as in a bizarre coincidence they seem to share a birthday as well as living on the same road!
Married in Q3 1939 in Kent then couple of months later found living in Surrey according to the 1939 Register but apparently leaving his new wife behind.
He is listed as an Automobile Fitter and sharing a property with a Watchmaker, Journeyman who also given as married. Perhaps this man had sent his wife away for safety and then got a lodger in. He must have returned back home after the war and died in 2000 at the age of 82.
13. Leonard E A DANIELS (1918 – 2003)
On the night of the 1921 Census he is found at 5 Fisher Street, Sandwich with his parents, grandmother and two siblings. His father is also an out of work labourer at the date.
Not traced in 1939 Register and appears he joined up in April 1939. He also was taken Prisoner of War in Germany. He seems to have married in 1942 before going away again.
He was captured in 1943 and spent about 18 months in camps. His address given as 5 Fisther Street still. Think he married again in 1968 and likely stayed in Kent until his death at 84 in 2003.
