As I was back in Kent for a few days decided to take advantage of the Dover Heritage Open Days 2025 events that have been organised. Really good selection of places to visit and talks going on in and around the town.
I managed to go to a few on 12 and 13 September 2025 and would have visited a couple more places but the weather was too horrible. On the Friday evening I went on a guided walk around part of the town with Barry O’Brien, behind the Dover Tales 1 page, on Facebook.
This one was to learn about Dover’s Wine, Brewing and Distilling Heritage. 2 It is commonly stated that at one point you could go to a different hostelry in the town every night of the year. There is a very interesting resource on different pubs in Kent hosted under Dover-Kent.com. 3
The meeting place was in the Market Square, next to the café that used to be known as Dickens Corner. Below is the image of the plaque that resides above the door. Whilst waiting for others to arrive for the excursion we were introduced to Albinus Invictus (aka Dobbin) the local Hooden 4 horse.

Sadly towards the end of our tour the weather took an extreme turn for the worse and ended up abandoning the last part as if you can’t hear the facts over the rain and tree canopies not shielding you then seemed time to call it a night.
Just before that though we had learnt about Richard Hamilton, a tailor, who ended up in South Australia and created Hamilton Wines 5. His Ewell Vineyards property appears to have been named after Temple Ewell 6.
