Goosey Goosey Gander 1 is a nursery rhyme with origins that date back to the 1780s. The only bit that I have ever really known is this first line and actually the standard lyrics are not very nice and involve throwing someone down the stairs for not saying their prayers.

It also appears to have been adopted by newspapers when referencing events involving a large number of geese as in these examples. The first is a 1958 reference in the Daily Express 2 and the second from the Market Rasen Weekly Mail 3 of 1995.

Having thought the family surname of GOOSEY would be fairly easy to trace in the newspapers rather than looking for specific individuals it has not been the case. Therefore, I have not spent as much time building out this part of the family tree as I could have done.

However, on looking at the probate reference in the National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administration) 4 for a 2x Great Uncle Thomas William GOOSEY have found there were three others with the same surname on the page for 1953.

Two of these probate entries list Northamptonshire locations which is the county where my known GOOSEY family can be traced back for a number of generations.

So am going to see if I can connect any of these other three names with my known family branch and writing the blog post as I go along for real time discourse.

My relative Thomas William GOOSEY leaves effects to Olive Margaret GOOSEY, spinster. From my research, on and off over many years, using Ancestry 5 know she is his daughter.

She was married with it being registered Q3 1953. I don’t know what her father died from but he was only 49 so must have been a sad and presumably low key event.

Thomas William GOOSEY was born outside the county of Northamptonshire, England and never lived there as far as I can tell. His father, my 2x Great Grandfather Christopher GOOSEY, was baptised in Irchester 6.

Potentially in St Katherine’s church although they did not have many records for the surname held there. Photographs below I took on a visit in July 2022.

My GOOSEY line seems to trace back in this location until early 1700s. Although, Northampton is further afield there is only a few miles between Higham Ferrers and Irchester.

Having established the connection to the probate record’s fourth entry will go on to look at the other three now and hopefully find out more about them.
