William Marshall POOR (1828 – 1876) and Mary KINGSHOTT (1829 – 1888)
William Marshall POOR was baptised on 17 September 1828 at West Dean, near Chichester in Sussex, England. His future spouse Mary KINGSHOTT was baptised on 09 March 1829 in Harting, Sussex, England. These two locations are under ten miles apart.
He was the middle of five I believe and she the second eldest of sixteen. Their siblings have not been fully researched to verify details. William and Mary married on 24 June 1854 at the parish church in Harting. They were of full age and William along with both their fathers are described as labourers.
He is found in the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses. No occupation given for him in the first, then Ag Lab in next two with Game Keeper in the last. She is found in the 1841, 1861, 1871 and 1881 Censuses. She is not with her parents in 1851 and just cannot find record that would be for her. No occupation given in most with Laundress in the last.
It appears they had nine children themselves born between 1856 and 1872. I do not know what happened to the eldest but seems three others died young.

Sadly, William died just a few years after the last infant was born and was buried on 03 March 1876. I believe to make ends meet this is why Mary took in laundry and supported their remaining children in this manner until they could be employed themselves or sadly died as in the case of the youngest child.
Apart from my direct ancestor the family seem to have remained in Sussex whereas she met the boy who was lodging next door and joined him on his excursions around the UK with work.
Would love to connect with other descendants of this couple and visit the area especially as the Weald & Downland Living Museum is based right there. Perhaps The Repair Shop would be able to sort out the Dent clock that I have ultimately inherited from my grandparents as sadly not in great condition.
