CLOVER, Jack (1918 – 1946)

Jack CLOVER was the eldest of two children born to Sydney John CLOVER (1894 – 1982), a Labourer then Police Officer, and Margaret Grace GALE (1896 – 1951).

Sidney was born in Chilham, Kent, England but seemed to move away for a while.  Margaret was born in Wiltshire.  They lived in London and married Q2 1916 in Wandsworth when in their early 20s.

Jack had just one brother (1922 – 2005) who married and moved to Yorkshire.

It appears that Sydney served in the 1914 – 1918 War which might be how he was in a position to meet Margaret if they were both moving around the country.

The last records before this were the 1911 Census and at that time he was living in Chilham in Kent and she seems to have been in Swindon, Wiltshire.  Her parents had both but looks like her mother came from Lambeth so perhaps she later moved to live with other family.

Jack came along a couple of years after their marriage.  His birth was registered in Lambeth District during Q2 1918.  His brother four years later was born in London as well.

After leaving the military it would appear his father became a Police Constable.  At the time of the 1939 Register Sydney is recorded in a block of flats full of Police Officers.

Although Margaret and Jack are not listed they were living with him at 88 Wray House.  I’m wondering if shortly after this they have decided to move to Kent.

Jack’s military career is not fully clear without much more research.  He was a private, with regimental number 80038 and in the Royal Army Service Corps.

Although World War II officially ended 2 September 1945 it wasn’t over straight away for everyone and would appear Jack was still away from home over 6 months later.

It is not entirely clear how he died but possibly an incident near barracks in Essex.  His Residence was given as 46 Field Butchery. He died on 24 February 1946 and was buried in Chartham near where his family were living.

Jack had married the daughter of George Robert DIXON (1879 – 1952) during Q3 1941 in Bridge District and they had a child together. Sadly only about the age of four when their father died.

Jack’s mother Margaret died Q4 1951 in Canterbury and his father Sydney seems to have remarried the following year.  It also looks like his widow remarried as well so his offspring hopefully benefitted from having more people in his life.

He was the husband of a 3C 2R to me.
